indian pipe (monotropa uniflora). once upon a time they used to be called saprophytes, but now it's myco-heterotrophs. they're non-photosynthetic plants which get their food from fungi whose mycelium they parasitize.

walklog:

7-18 nanaimo river regional park, 2.9 km, 1:09. biggest patch of indian pipe i've ever seen, but it's so dark in that part of the forest that i didn't get a better picture (like in profile so one can see why it got its name) without a tripod.
